November Seminar
A seminar on parenting was held November 3rd and 4th and the Micah House in Council Bluffs. Guest speaker, Wenday Sorensen, presented techniques and strategies for more effective ways to parent. The next seminar will be in March.


STARS Orientation
Orientation for 2011 was held Friday, August 19th at the First Church of the Nazarene. Newly selected scholars and scholars earning Academic Achievement Awards received their certificates from Jerry Mathiasen, Senior Vice-President of the Iowa West Foundation.

STARS Scholarship Alumni Association
The new STARS Scholarship Alumni Association met Thursday, August 11th at Godfather's to discuss the new by-laws, creating a database and survey of STARS Graduates and plans for the presentation at the August 19th Orientation. Family Fun Day

The carnival atmosphere with games, activities and food was evident on July 22, 2011 when STARS hosted the Family Fun Day. Over 200 people braved the heat and attended the event which was partially funded by the Promise Partners Community Network Grant. A special thanks to the Family Fun Day Committee for planning the event: Tenisha Vawser, committee chairperson, Jolene Kephart, Angela Kermoade, Lisa Lyons, Claire Horner, Glennis Guerrero and son Efrain and cousin Little David, April Barnhouse and Misty Wittkop. These ladies are to be commended for their hard work and dedication towards making this event successful. STARS Recognition Dinner
Thursday, May 26th
Nearly 300 people attended the Spring STARS Recognition Dinner held May 26th at the Hilton Garden Inn. Guest speaker, State Representative Mark Brandenburg reflected on his own path as a non-traditional student as well as applauding the scholars for their achievements, recognizing their impact on their children's education, and encouraging them to continue setting goals for themselves. A special Thank You to Representative Brandenburg for his presentation!

29 Scholars were recognized for graduating this spring or summer. 27 graduated with an Associate's Degree or license while 2 graduated with a Bachelor's Degree.

75% of the scholars were recognized for receiving a 3.0 or above for the spring term. Of these, 26% had an amazing 4.0! These scholars received a special academic award for their achievement.

Tenisha Vawser received the STARS 2011 Outstanding Volunteer Award for
going above and beyond by serving on various STARS committees, helping with
orientation and seminars, and always giving 110% to the STARS Program!

Each 2011-2012 scholar received a scholarship certificate as well as a gift from Representative Mark Brandenburg, Iowa West Foundation Board member Emma Chance, and CB Community Education Foundation Board member Bill Ballenger. Thank you to these individuals for helping with this event. A special thank you to Jerry Mathiasen, Senior Vice-President of the Iowa West Foundation for helping as well. Additional dignitaries who attended the event included: Dr. Martha Bruckner, Superintendent of Council Bluffs Schools, Matt Walsh, City Councilman and President of the CEF Board, three representatives from the STARS Scholarship Selection Committee: Dr. Gina Schochenmaier, Linda Ring and June Feller, Dee Wentzel from Section 8 and Gilda Bettis from the New Iowan (Iowa Works) and Butch Lecuona, Executive Director of the CB Community Education Foundation.

Celebrate CB (Pride) Parade
STARS Scholars participated in the annual Celebrate CB Parade on Saturday, May 14th. The weather was perfect and so was the turnout! Thanks to all who participated. A special thanks goes to: Tenisha Vawser, parade chair, Angela Kermoade for her fantastic t-shirt design, and Melissa Still, Lori Shinn, Donna Hick and Robyn Hick for creating banners and other decorations for the truck.
